As I tell people often times these days, "I really shouldn't complain about things as much as I do, but that's not going to stop me." This story, relayed via Twitter by the amazing @illusoryTenent really drove home the point that corporations ARE out to give the screw to employees. Via Milwaukee Magazine, you can read the article at this link http://www.milwaukeemag.com/article/822012-HangingOn about how the very profitable corporation Journal Communications is sticking it to employees of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Now, we can have the debate about how profitable the newspaper division is as compared to the television or radio division and all that jazz, but to me it's a moot point. Corporate parent is thriving, so all that profit should "trickle-down," right all you Laissez-Faire, Adam Smith, Milton Friedman, loving capitalists who think that they are god's gift to intellectual thought?
WRONG
Someone forgot to mention that the workers in 2012 are protected from trickle-down by a giant-ass vinyl sheet, conveniently placed over them by the multimillionaire and billionaire people who control our economy. Seriously?! Why would I not question what "news" is and isn't published in the MJS based on what stories the owners do and don't object to? Then again what's scarier is the fact that most people won't even have the idea to even ask those questions or think that such things even happen. (Walkergate anyone? I'll take "Cognitive Dissidence's" take on the matter any day)
I used to not be so cynical... I really didn't. But after being in college between 2005 and 2010, and seeing the economic collapse smack straight up against my opportunity to start out in this world, I certainly don't think that unchecked capitalism has worked. I also don't think that the deregulation that we experienced during the 1980's and 90's provided a the average person a whole heck of a lot of gain either. Furthermore, I want someone to explain to me why Ronald Freaking Reagan is put up on a giant god-damn pedestal? Seriously... what the hell did he even do as President? Have far out dreams of "Star Wars?" Have a bunch of illegal weapons sales & small time military interventions in South/Central America?
Okay, off the Soap-Box (for now)...
