Land of Confusion: MORE Part V - Adams County

As frequent readers know, I was away this past weekend relaxing with family. My grandparents are lucky enough to own a parcel of land in Adams County near Coloma which has been the "family get-away" for over 30 years. Now, my aunt and uncle just recently bought some land near Cottonville, further continuing the tradition of vacationing in the central sands. Well, look at what I was greeted with less than 2 miles from my grandparents place, a lovely billboard along Highway 21 about 5 miles west of Coloma:

D'oh!

The Ron Paul movement has been quite strong in central Wisconsin for a few years now. I remember plenty of signs during the 2008 election supporting Congressman Paul, but they were largely just home made or small yard signs virtually unnoticed along a busy highway. Well, not anymore! This is a picture I took of a double sided billboard where the congressman has decided to sink some cash into an area where he already has grassroots support. Smart play by the Congressman, even if it is pretty much a waste of money because he's got a snowballs chance of winning the nomination. (Come on Nebraska!)

Here is the thing, Adams County has absolutely NO reason to support Ron Paul. I have already written about Adams County's voting history during my first installment in the "Land of Confusion" series, and after looking at that post again am still baffled at how Scott Walker won this county. Again need to point out that this is one of the poorest counties in Wisconsin, with some of the largest need for social services, almost always provided by a local, state, or federal government agency. This county relies heavily on farming and quite often the use migrant workers of Hispanic/Latino heritage to pick delicate crops. Again, this county has absolutely NO reason to support Ron Paul for President.

Here are a few helpful links that illustrate my point. First, a great post from Retiring Guy's Digest in April, 2011 about Adams County's poverty:

Next, you can look at the quick facts from the US Census yourself:

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/55/55001.html

- Median income for a family: Almost $12,000 less than the state average
- Persons 25+ with a High School Diploma: 84%  (State Average is 89%)

Now, take a look at the Wikipedia page related to Ron Paul's positions:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_positions_of_Ron_Paul

Why would Adams County vote for him? Democrats, I know it's rural, I know it's sparsely populated, but why aren't we winning this county? Are we being too ivory tower & State St. Madison and not enough bread and butter bang for your buck? We need to figure out how to win this county if we want to win statewide elections and long term progressives!

Seriously... We have issues in this county! This is the Land of Confusion!
